Letter to the Editor:

I asked the paper to reprint a portion of the original council story where they voted yes to the decision of tearing down our 97 year old Toledo Community Building to help remind all of you what is happening: "The City of Toledo had pledged $25,000 to the project ($5,000 a year) at the beginning of the year. Roan informed the council that $600,000 is needed to be raised in order to file for a grant with what was Vision Iowa and is now Enhance Iowa. The deadline for that grant application is April 15. However there is also a deadline in July. They currently have $80,000 on hand according to Roan. The Wieting could get $250,000 from that Enhance Iowa Grant." - Toledo Chronicle

WHO? OUR TOLEDO HISTORY

WHAT? The demolition of the 97 yrs. old Toledo Comm. Bldg.

WHEN? In the very near future, 2017/2018

WHERE? Church street in Toledo

WHY? WHY? WHY? To my knowledge at least 3 men from our very own community have decided it would be to their benefit to have this "Useful, Wonderful, Totally functional and also HANDICAP accessible building demolished. They want to let this building set empty for 6 months so it can deteriorate and be declared abandoned. Next tear it down and sell the land for $1.00, yes you read correct $1,00!!!!!!!

The Toledo City Council voted YES!!!! Then the buyer, assuming the Theater wants the ground; will turn it into a parking lot. A PARKING LOT?!?!?!?!?! Toledo has no need for anymore parking, we have plenty of parking now in down town Toledo.

The Toledo Theater has already been renovated to its previous Glory and is busy with movies, shows, and events. At times they also use the Comm. Bldg. It is over 100 yrs. old and Mr. Jim Roan was very pivotal in the Grants and fund raisers along with the Theater Board members in raising funds for remodeling. Why could this not also be done for the 97 yr. old Comm. Bldg.?

Instead of a grant to demolish this Grand Bldg. we should be asking for a Grant to refurbish this part of Toledo History, instead of throwing it away. Then it can continue to be used as the Mayors offices, City Clerks office, dance studio and most important as our "Senior Healthy Center." As for the Theater, they could add a canopy between the buildings for inclement weather. They could also use the main rooms for their dinners as there is a complete kitchen, restrooms and it's HANDICAP accessible. The Senior Healthy Center uses more than just the tables for meals. They also have offices for private matters, use the kitchen, have Senior events and activities. This is also a place for their social gatherings Monday through Friday year round. NOW THEY ARE BEING KICKED OUT!!!!!!!!!

As for the Reinig Center, it was constructed as a larger place to hold special larger events that the Comm. Bldg. could not hold. There are 2 offices and a very large kitchen. It is NOT to be used as city offices, it was NEVER intended for this use. What would Mrs. Reinig and our founding Senior Citizens think of the 3 or more men trying to do all this?

PEOPLE OF TAMA COUNTY! Are you going to just sit and let this happen? Stand up for our county seat, go and visit this Comm. Bldg. during the week and make your own decisions of what is right or wrong. Help prove-the Toledo City Council that wrongs CAN BE CHANGED, IT IS NEVER" LATE.

To the Toledo City Council I say, "Shame on you for quietly succumbing to an unjust pressure to vote yes on the demise of this 97 yr. old building.

Life long Citizen who cares
