Pete Rose: Yes or No?

Last weekend, Baseball's Hall of Fame inducted five more members into this most coveted honor for any baseball player. In all the years baseball has been a sport, less than 250 players have been so honored. Names like Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle, Williams, Mays, Cobb and others enshrine the Hall of Fame. However one of baseball's all time greats; I mean, ALL TIME, ALL TIME GREATS, is not there. Twenty five years ago, Pete, (Charlie Hustle) Rose was banned from baseball. After being investigated and taken to court by baseball's highest office over allegations of illegal gambling, including betting on baseball and even on games he was managing, Rose signed a deal accepting a permanent spot on baseball's ineligible list.

To this day, Pete Rose, has been and will continue to be a "thorn in the flesh" or "elephant in the room" to Major League Baseball and it's Hall of Fame. Why? Because a lot of people, THIS WRITER INCLUDED, love him and believe it's time for him to be inducted into Cooperstown. Plain and simple!! Haruumph!!

After all, everyone loves a good redemption story, don't we? When someone does wrong, admits it, apologizes for it and walks quietly with all humility, we just eat that up. And of course we forgive, forgive and forgive. However, humility and apologizing are not strong suits for Pete Rose. He is as hard-nosed today as he was when he played. Thus the name, "Charlie Hustle."

Pete Rose belongs in the Hall of Fame. Period. Go ahead and put on his plaque he was a baseball gambler who was banned from the game. Put his plaque in a separate room for bad guys in a room all by himself.....along with the likes of Ty Cobb, Rogers Hornsby, Tris Speaker, Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle and a host of others. It's definitely not a Hall of Saints by anyone's measurement. There are bigots, boozers, dopers, cheaters, womanizers and even wife-beaters enshrined within. Yet they are there because they were the best ball players of their respective eras. Period! And Pete Rose, one of the greatest players of his era and holder of baseball's greatest records is banned from even being considered because of his infractions as a manager.

Rose holds baseball's record for having more hits, (4,256) than any baseball player in history. The most! He also played in more games (3,562) had ten, (count em), 200-hit seasons, won three batting titles and led the league in hits seven times......seven times!! He also played more than 500 games at five different positions and became an All-Star at all five of them!! And don't forget that he played for 6 National League pennant winners, won three World Series rings and that he played harder than any other baseball player in the history of the game.

Yea, he did what he did and he shouldn't a done it but despite that, baseball's Hall of Fame is just not the same without the likes of Pete Rose in it. That's the way I see it.

How do you see it? Let me know at jsheda@indytel.com or call me at 319.327.4640 and let me know.
