David Old Bear Sr. "NE-KO-TI", 77, of Tama, passed away Monday, November 6, 2017 at Unity Point Health in Marshalltown. Traditional Graveside Services will be held Tuesday, November 7, 2017 at 2:00 PM at the Morgan Cemetery on the Meskwaki Settlement in rural Tama with Homer Bear Jr. as speaker. A Traditional Wake will be held Monday evening at the Bear Clan Ceremonial Building on the Meskwaki Settlement in rural Tama.

David was born on October 3, 1940, on the Meskwaki Settlement in rural Tama, Iowa, the son of Jack and Ada (Kapayou) Old Bear.

He graduated from Tama High School in 1962 and attended Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa. After college, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps proudly serving his country in the Vietnam War.

In 1967, he married Karen Keahna. David was employed at Fisher Controls in Marshalltown and retired after twenty-eight years. He served on the Meskwaki Tribal Council as Tribal Chairman. David was an avid Hawkeye fan and loved watching and dancing in the Pow Wows. His greatest love was his grandkids and great-grandkids.

Survivors include his wife, Karen of Tama; his children, David (Alicia) Old Bear Jr., Penny Old Bear, and Billy (Tonya) Old Bear Sr., all of Tama; proud grandfather to Zach, Zane, Kiedis, Sierra, Billy Jack, and Chaysen Old Bear; great-grandchildren, Kaimrin (KJ) Ellingson, Malania Old Bear, Kelley Old Bear, Ami Old Bear, Aiyanna Ramsey-Old Bear, and Calvin Old Bear; siblings, Charles Old Bear, and Chloe Young Bear both of Tama; adopted sisters, Alma Ward, Hilda Young Bear, and Ernestine Roberts all of Tama; and many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents; and two brothers, Roy Kapayou Sr., and Russell Old Bear.

Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home, Tama-Toledo is assisting the family with the arrangements.
