Marilyn Ruth Wood, age 81, of Gilbert, Arizona, formerly of Denison,

Toledo, and Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away peacefully on November 20,

2017.

She was born on January 13, 1936, the daughter of Edward James

Savery and Leona Elizabeth (Ambrose) Savery. After several years on the

farm and attending country school, her family moved to Denison, Iowa,

where she graduated from high school in 1954. She then enrolled at the

University of Northern Iowa, (known as Iowa State Teacher's College at the

time), graduating in 1958 with a BA in music education. She taught vocal

and instrumental music in the Welton and Del-Mar Schools.

After a time at home raising her children and teaching piano lessons, she obtained her MA degree in Library Science from UNI. She worked part time in the South Tama County schools, before becoming a full time media specialist in the East Marshall School District for over 22 years. She also worked evenings part time at Marshalltown Community College as a media specialist.

Marilyn sang in the Presbyterian church choir, in both Toledo and

Marshalltown.She was a charter member of the American Association of

University Women in Toledo. She also belonged to the Tuesday Musical

Club and to Creative Retirement in Marshalltown. She played saxophone in

the MCC community band, and the Marshalltown municipal band for many

years. Marilyn also performed in many community concerts and theatrical

productions. She will famously be remembered for performing several

historical roles during the 1976 bicentennial celebration. She also enjoyed

square dancing with the Toledo Squares, and her monthly card club.

Marilyn was united in marriage to Audrey Dale Wood on June 9, 1957, and

they were blessed with four children. She is survived by Douglas (Rebecca)

Wood of Park City, Utah, Diane (Matt) Vincent, of Byron Center, Michigan,

Denise (Tracey) Fikes, of Neenah, Wisconsin, and Debra (Matt) Bro, of

Gilbert, Arizona. She is also survived by her brother, Melvin (Lois) Savery, of Citrus Heights, California, sixteen grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father in 2002, her mother in 2003, and her husband in 2015.

Marilyn was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to all who knew and loved her.

She will always be remembered for her infectious laugh, her love of travel, and her giving spirit.

A memorial service will be planned in Marshalltown during the summer of

2018. Memorial gifts in her honor may be sent to the Marshalltown

Municipal Band, City of Marshalltown, "Marilyn Wood Memorial Fund for

Municipal Band."
