As a freshman, Taurice Grant has already reached a milestone in his high school athletic career that some never reach. He qualified for the State Track and Field meet in the 400 Meter Run.

Grant is one of two freshman in Class 1A who qualified for the boys 400 Meter Run. The other freshman qualifier is Parker Rochford from Edgewood - Colesburg.

To qualify for the State Meet Grant and the rest of the Meskwaki Warriors travelled to BGM for the State Qualifying Meet on Thursday, May 10. They competed with Baxter, BCLUW, Belle Plaine, BGM, Collins-Maxwell, Colo-Nesco, GMG, HLV, Iowa Valley, Lynnville-Sully, Montezuma, North Mahaska and North Tama.

Grant finished in 2nd place at Thursday's qualifying site with a time of 53.19.

"I felt hyped as soon as I found out and proud of myself because its always been a goal of mine to make it to state to prove that I am faster than my older brother," said Grant.

Grant has two older brothers Terrell and Tyus.

"I always thought the 400 was tough because you don't want to be that guy that gases out at the beginning but you also don't want to be that guy who gets burned from the start. It just comes down to who can hold a fast pace the longest and have enough to burn it at the end," said Grant.

Qualifying as a freshman is not lost on Grant. "(It) feels good, makes me feel like I have a good chance these next few years because I'm only going to get faster," said Grant.

His season pr is 52.9 which he set at the conference meet. Grant can credit some of his speed to being a multi-sport athlete. He plays football and basketball for the Warriors.

"Doing all these sports keep me well conditioned and I don't get a break from anything. Its always go, go, go and I wouldn't want it another way," said Grant.
