Virtue of one room schools

Letter to the Editor:

Recently the Tama County Historical Society hosted a "Day in a One-Room Schoolhouse" at the restored Haven School. Home School students had the pleasure of spending a day in the setting of a one room school used many years ago. This was an experience they will never forget.

Teaching history to young folks of that age can be very impressive if they can actually take part in it Elizabeth Reese, current president of the society, served as teacher. Brown bag lunches were appropriate, as well as use of the "out houses", which most students of their age would not have any knowledge of.

The Haven School has the desks, books, globe, playground, etc. that came with the building.

I personally feel this is a chance in a lifetime for students of grade school age to spend a day living the life of their grandparents. I, myself spent eight years in a 1-room school. I went to Whiskey Bottom in Indian Village Township. Not every area has the opportunity to take advantage of such an occasion. I hope our South Tama School will take advantage of this opportunity, and let their students actually live history. Other county schools are invited to take advantage of this opportunity.

Anyone wanting to take advantage of the school can contact the Tama County Historical Society at 641-484-6767.
