The South Tama Trojans returned from Winter Break with two dual wins on Thursday, January 3. The Trojans travelled to Center Point Urbana where they took on the Pointers and Iowa City Liberty. South Tama easily topped IC Liberty 63-10 and managed to secured a close 39-36 victory over the Pointers. The two wins moved the Trojans to 12-6 in dual wins this season.

The night began with a dual between STC and IC Liberty. The Trojans won all but three matches for the 63-10 finish.

The dual started at weight class 160. Drew Snyder won a narrow victory over STC's Dallas Horne 4-2.

At 170 Payton Vest put the Trojans on the board with a fall over DaJohn Willis (2:29). Aiden Waseskuk took a forfeit at 182. At 220 Cael Kellogg made quick work sticking Damion Wilson (1:04). Kalem Schrock, Brody Chyma and Logan Arp each pinned their opponents to put the Trojan team score at 36-3. STC's Kyler Smith received the Trojans second forfeit of the dual. Then Andres Lugo came out and stuck Ethan Armstrong in the opening seconds of the match. Boden Koehler also got a quick pin over Jackson Phillip.

The Lightning picked up their second win at 138 with Jarrod Alger getting a 10-7 decision win over Brayden Smith. At 145 Garrett Arp topped Elijah Terwilleger 4-1. Closing out the dual IC Liberty's Kaleb Williams defeated STC's Vincent Branan by major decision 11-3.

The second dual of the night was between the Trojans and the CP-U Stormin Pointers. The dual started at 170 with Payton Vest receiving a forfeit followed by Aiden Waseskuk also receiving a forfeit. At 195 Aaron Neave pinned Kaden Neal. Cael Kellogg also received a forfeit at 220 to give the Trojans an early 24-0 lead over the Pointers.

At 285 CP-U's Derek Besick stuck Kalem Schrock. STC's Brody Chyma secured another fall for the Trojans over Fredrico Russo. Then at 113 Cole Whitehead got a 6-2 decision win over Logan Arp.

At 120 Caleb Fuessley stuck Kyler Smith. Fuessley is ranked 4th at 120 by IAWrestle. At 126 STC's Andre Lugo turned a match around after being down by pinning Patrick Conway.

CP-U then went on a four match streak with 7th ranked Keegan Scheeler pinning Boden Koehler at 132, Adam Hansen got a tech fall over Brayden Smith at 138, Clark Dylan defeated Garrett Arp 8-2 at 145 and Collin Hoskins pinned Vincent Branan at 152.

Going into the final match of the night at 160 South Tama had just a one point advantage at 36-35. Whoever won the 160 pound match would take the dual for their team. STC senior Dallas Horne stepped up in a huge way for his team and wrestled a smart match winning 8-2 and locking in the Trojans second dual win of the night at 39-36.

"I?knew it could be a close match. I thought maybe they were favorited in more matches but I thought there would be a lot of swing matches were we matched up really good. I?thought it could be a fun dual. I was talking with the team and it was closer than we wanted it but that makes it really exciting when it comes down to the wire and then your athlete performs well. Dallas didn't necessarily win it for us but he sealed it definitely. Junior Lugo came back and pinned a kid. There were a lot of matches where we did some really good things and even some of our wrestlers tonight who didn't come out with two wins or even any wins like a Brayden Smith who showed a lot of improvement from the break. I thought our conditioning looked really good. It's a fun team to coach because we are young but you get to see the improvement every week. Dallas has come a long way. As a freshmen I?think he had some varsity time. He won one match and he's worked hard and made himself a lot better. It's fun to see him have some success as a senior because to his credit he's done a lot of work to get there," said coach Nate Van Dyke.

The Trojans will be home on Thursday evening for a dual against Solon. Senior night will be celebrated.
